Vessel Age and Park Standards: What Older Boats Must Prove

Buyers arriving in Labuan Bajo often ask the wrong question about age. “How old is too old?” has no
useful answer here, because a well-maintained ironwood phinisi built two decades ago can be a
structurally superior asset to a poorly built hull launched five years ago. The question that matters
is what an older vessel has to prove in order to keep working inside a national park, and whether the
boat in front of you can prove it.

Why age is a poor proxy for condition

Traditional Indonesian boatbuilding uses timber selected for durability, and hulls are routinely
rebuilt in stages across their lives — planking replaced, frames sistered, decks renewed. A vessel
described as twenty years old may contain a large proportion of material that is far younger. The
inverse is also true: a boat built quickly during a demand surge, from timber that was not properly
seasoned, can be tired before its first decade closes.

What actually determines longevity is the maintenance regime and the quality of the original timber
and fastenings. Both are assessable. Neither is visible in a build year.

The four things an older vessel must demonstrate

1. Structural integrity that a surveyor will put in writing

Fastening condition, frame soundness, planking moisture, keel and garboard condition, and evidence
of how previous repairs were executed. A hull that has been maintained properly shows consistent,
documented work. A hull that has been patched shows improvised repairs, mixed fastening types and
filler where there should be timber.

2. Safety equipment appropriate to its declared capacity

Life-saving appliances, fire detection and suppression, emergency lighting, communications and
evacuation arrangements, all current and all sized for the passenger number the vessel actually
carries. Older boats commonly drift here: the guest count grew over the years while the equipment did
not. This is both a compliance exposure and a genuine safety issue, and it is the first thing to
verify.

3. Environmental handling that stands up in a protected area

Komodo National Park is a protected marine environment and expectations around waste, sewage and
fuel handling have tightened steadily. An older vessel needs functioning holding capacity, sensible
greywater management, secure fuel transfer arrangements and a crew who follow a defined procedure.
Vessels that were built before these expectations existed can be retrofitted, but it is work that
should be priced into the purchase rather than assumed.

4. A documentary trail that matches the hull

Older boats accumulate modifications — re-engining, deck extensions, cabin reconfiguration — and the
paperwork does not always follow. Where the documents describe a different vessel from the one at the
dock, regularisation takes time and cannot be rushed at completion. Check this early.

Where older vessels genuinely outperform

There are real advantages, and they are not sentimental. An older boat has a proven behaviour
profile: everyone knows how she handles at Batu Bolong, what she does at anchor in a cross-current,
what breaks and how often. Her weaknesses have been found and fixed by successive owners. Depreciation
has largely happened, so the resale exposure is lower. And guests visiting Komodo are frequently
seeking a traditional vessel — the aesthetic that a well-kept older phinisi delivers is precisely what
sells the charter.

A practical assessment framework

  1. Establish the real maintenance history — slipway periods, major works, who did them.
Absence of records on an older boat is a significant negative.
  2. Fund a full out-of-water survey. On any vessel past its first decade this is not optional.
  3. Price the compliance gap — safety equipment, waste handling and documentation regularisation
    as a single line item.
  4. Assess the machinery separately from the hull. Engines and generators are replaceable at known
cost; a compromised hull is not.
  5. Model a shorter horizon. Plan on five to eight years of operation with a defined major refit
in the middle, rather than assuming indefinite service.

The refit-versus-replace calculation

At some point a buyer should compare the acquisition price plus the required refit against the cost
of commissioning a new hull from the South Sulawesi yards. New construction takes considerably longer
and carries build risk, but delivers a vessel specified to your operation with no inherited compromises.
Where an older boat needs substantial structural work, the two numbers converge faster than buyers
expect — and at that point the older vessel only makes sense if it can start earning immediately while
a new build could not.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a maximum age for vessels operating in Komodo?

Condition, safety compliance and documentation govern in practice rather than a simple age cut-off. A well-maintained older vessel that meets current standards continues to work; a newer one that does not, will not.

How often should a wooden hull be slipped?

Annually is the standard for a working vessel in tropical service, with a more thorough period every few years. Owners who stretch this interval save money in the short term and pay for it structurally later.

Does an older boat cost more to insure?

Generally yes, and some underwriters require a recent survey before offering terms at all. Get an indicative insurance position before committing, because a boat you cannot insure economically is a boat you cannot operate commercially.

What is the single strongest sign of a well-kept older vessel?

A clean, dry, accessible engine room with labelled systems. Owners who maintain the parts guests never see maintain everything else too, and the correlation is remarkably reliable.
