
A dive boat for sale in Komodo is judged first on its air supply, its tender capability and
its ability to hold station in current — not on cabin finish. Komodo diving happens in some of
the strongest tidal flow in Indonesia, and a vessel that cannot put divers precisely on a site and
recover them downstream is not a dive boat regardless of how many tanks it carries. That operational
requirement is what separates a genuine dive platform from a general liveaboard with a compressor
bolted to the aft deck.
The five systems that decide the price
- Compressor bank. Fill capacity has to exceed the fleet’s daily consumption with margin.
A single compressor sized exactly to demand means one failure cancels the trip. Serious dive vessels
carry redundancy, and buyers should price a vessel without it accordingly. - Nitrox capability. Membrane or partial-pressure blending materially widens the guest
market. Retrofitting it later is possible but rarely less costly than buying it installed and certified. - Tank storage and rigging stations. Fixed racks with individual stations, secured for
sea, are the difference between an orderly dive deck and a daily hazard. - Tenders. Komodo requires powered tenders that can chase a drifting group against
current. Underpowered dinghies are the most common weak point on otherwise good hulls. - Freshwater production. Rinse tanks, camera tanks and guest showers consume far more
water than a non-dive itinerary. Watermaker capacity constrains trip length directly.

Sites the vessel has to be able to work
A buyer should test the boat against the itinerary it will actually sell. In practice that means
Batu Bolong and Castle Rock in the north, where current dictates a tight drop window and a tender
that can recover divers well downstream; Manta Point and Karang Makassar, where the requirement is
shallow-water manoeuvring around surfacing groups; and the southern sites, where swell exposure and
colder water change guest comfort expectations. A vessel that handles the north comfortably will
generally handle the rest.
Survey priorities for a dive platform
Add four dive-specific items to a standard hull and machinery survey:
- Air quality testing from the compressor output, not a certificate on the wall. Oil
carry-over and filter neglect are common and invisible. - Compressor service records with hours, filter changes and any overheating history.
- Tender engine hours and hull condition — tenders take the hardest life on the vessel and
are frequently the most deferred maintenance item. - Emergency oxygen and evacuation planning against the declared diver count, including the
practical route to the nearest chamber.
Buying an operating dive business versus a hull
Some dive boats come to market with an operating history, a divemaster team and repeat agent
relationships. That package is worth more than the hull alone, but it needs separate diligence:
staff contracts, instructor certifications, agency affiliations and whether the guest reviews follow
the boat or the brand. Where only the hull transfers, budget a full season to build booking volume
and price the acquisition on that basis.
New build as an alternative
Where the market has no compressor-ready vessel in your band, a purpose-built dive platform can be
commissioned through the South Sulawesi yards, with the dive deck, tank stowage and tender davits
designed in rather than retrofitted. Build timelines run longer than a purchase, but the operational
fit is materially better and the first-season downtime is usually lower.

Can a general liveaboard be converted into a dive boat?
Often yes, and it is a common route. The realistic conversion cost covers compressor installation and power supply, tank racking, a dive platform and ladder rated for current exits, rinse tanks and an upgraded tender. Deck space and generator headroom decide whether the conversion is sensible or a compromise you will regret.
How much compressor capacity is enough?
Work from the worst case: maximum divers, four dives a day, twin tanks for the technical guests. If the bank cannot cover that with the boat also making water and running hotel load, the vessel will bottleneck in high season.
Does the vessel need its own instructors?
Not necessarily. Many owners run with a contracted dive team or partner with an operator. But if the sale is priced on an operating business, the dive staff and their certifications are part of what you are buying and should be documented.
What is the biggest hidden cost after purchase?
Tender replacement. Buyers budget carefully for the main engine and then discover the tenders that make the diving possible are at the end of their working life. Inspect them with the same seriousness as the main machinery.
