concentrates in a few kilometres of coast. A vessel already established here carries relationships
that do not appear on any invoice: the engineer who knows which generator is temperamental, the
agent who fills the shoulder season, the harbour staff who assign tender space. Buying a boat from
another region and repositioning it means rebuilding all of that from zero, usually across a full
season.
It also changes verification. In Labuan Bajo you can watch a boat leave and return, ask the crew
what actually broke last season, and cross-check the answer with the yard that fixed it. Photographs

Mooring, crew and bookings: the three local negotiations
Mooring. Harbour position is not freehold and cannot simply be sold, but continuity of
position is negotiable and worth documenting in the sale agreement rather than assuming it follows
the hull.
Crew. The captain and engineer carry the vessel’s operating knowledge. Retention terms —
a defined handover period, agreed wages, a stay bonus tied to the first season — should be settled
before the deposit. A boat that arrives without its crew is a significantly weaker asset than the
one you inspected.
Forward bookings. Deposits already taken for future departures need explicit treatment:
transferred with the vessel, refunded by the seller, or honoured under the seller’s entity. Silence
here produces disputes in the first month of new ownership.

Do I need to be in Labuan Bajo to buy?
You do not need to be present for the paperwork, but we strongly recommend attending the sea trial and overnight generator test in person or sending a surveyor you appointed yourself. Remote purchases of overnight vessels are where the largest post-sale surprises concentrate.
Can the mooring position really transfer?
Continuity of position is arranged in practice rather than sold as a title. It is handled through the harbour and the operating entity, and it should be written into the sale agreement as an obligation on the seller to support the transition, not left to goodwill.
What is the best month to buy?
Vessels list most heavily at the close of high season, when owners have finished the year and decided whether to continue. Buying then gives the widest choice and the longest runway to complete refit work before the next season opens.
Is a wooden hull a liability at resale?
Not in this market. A well-maintained ironwood phinisi holds value strongly because it is what guests come to Komodo to sail on. What destroys resale value is deferred hull maintenance and undocumented repairs, on any material.
