Insurance is usually the last item a Komodo buyer thinks about and one of the first that can derail a completion. Cover must be in force at the moment risk transfers — not the following week — and underwriters have their own requirements that take time to satisfy. Buyers who start the insurance conversation after agreeing the price routinely find themselves delaying handover or, worse, taking delivery uninsured.

The three layers of cover

Hull and machinery

Covers physical loss or damage to the vessel itself. The sum insured should reflect realistic replacement value in this market, not the purchase price if you negotiated well and not an optimistic valuation if you did not. Underinsurance triggers average clauses that reduce claim payments proportionally — a trap that surfaces only when you claim.

Protection and indemnity

Third-party liabilities: injury to crew, damage to other vessels and property, pollution, wreck removal. For a vessel operating inside a protected marine park, pollution and wreck removal exposure deserves particular attention because the environmental sensitivity of the area raises both the likelihood of an expensive response and its cost.

Passenger liability

Distinct from general third-party cover and essential for any vessel carrying paying guests. Limits should be assessed against realistic international claim levels, not local norms, because your guests are frequently from jurisdictions where claims are pursued vigorously. Diving operations require specific extensions; a standard passenger policy may exclude the activity that is your core product.

What underwriters will ask for

  • A recent survey report from a surveyor they recognise. This is the most common blocker — an underwriter may decline your surveyor and require another.
  • Full vessel particulars: build year, material, dimensions, engines, safety equipment inventory.
  • Declared trading area and intended operations, stated accurately. Operating outside a declared area voids cover at exactly the moment you need it.
  • Crew experience, particularly the master’s qualifications and time in the region.
  • Claims history for the vessel and, sometimes, for the owner.
  • Evidence of a maintenance regime, and for older vessels a commitment to a slipway schedule.

Timing: bind before handover

Work backwards from the completion date and allow three to four weeks. The sequence that works:

  1. Approach brokers as soon as the vessel is identified and the survey is scheduled.
  2. Provide the survey report the day it is issued.
  3. Obtain terms in writing, including all conditions and warranties, before completion.
  4. Satisfy any pre-binding conditions — commonly rectification of specific survey findings.
  5. Bind cover effective from the moment of transfer of risk, confirmed in writing.

Confirm explicitly when risk transfers under your sale agreement. If the contract says risk passes on signature but the vessel remains at the seller’s mooring for two weeks, you are carrying uninsured exposure for those two weeks unless cover is arranged to match.

How survey findings shape the premium

This is where the survey pays for itself a second time. Underwriters price uncertainty. A vessel with a thorough, well-organised survey report, a clear defect list and evidence of rectification receives better terms than an identical vessel with a vague report. Where findings are serious, expect one of three outcomes: a warranty requiring rectification within a set period, an increased deductible for the relevant risk, or a specific exclusion. Read the warranties carefully — breaching one can void the policy entirely rather than merely limiting a claim.

Local, regional or international placement

Indonesian insurers understand the local operating environment and settle in rupiah, which suits locally denominated repair costs. Regional and international markets, typically accessed via Singapore, offer higher limits and broader wordings, which matters for higher-value vessels and for passenger liability where guests come from claim-active jurisdictions. Many owners in the mid and upper bands end up with a combination. Whichever route, verify the insurer’s financial standing and, critically, its practical claims-handling capability in eastern Indonesia — a policy from an insurer with no presence or adjuster network in the region is worth considerably less than it appears at renewal time.

Recurring exclusions to check

  • Named-storm or seasonal weather limitations that may conflict with your operating calendar.
  • Crew qualification warranties that your actual crew may not satisfy.
  • Navigation limits that exclude sites your itinerary depends on.
  • Diving activity exclusions on passenger cover.
  • Conditions requiring specific safety equipment to be maintained and tested on schedule.

Each of these has caught owners in this region. Read the wording, not the summary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I insure the boat before completing the purchase?

You can obtain terms and have cover ready to incept, but the policy attaches when you acquire an insurable interest. Arrange for cover to bind at the exact moment risk transfers under the sale agreement, and get that confirmation in writing.

Will an older wooden vessel get cover?

Yes, routinely, but expect a recent survey requirement, a higher deductible and warranties about maintenance. Establish this early — insurability is a real constraint on which older boats are commercially viable.

Is local insurance enough for passenger liability?

For smaller operations it can be. For vessels carrying international guests at higher price points, the limits available locally are often below what a serious claim would reach, so a regional or international placement is usually the prudent answer.

What happens if I operate outside my declared trading area?

Cover may be suspended or void for that period. If your itineraries extend beyond Komodo — toward Alor, Sumbawa or further east — declare the full intended range at placement rather than seeking an extension after the fact.
